In the spirit of this year’s Brazilian Day in LA which is about our community coming together and what we can give back, we have chosen to support an incredible organization that will directly help save lifes, including a Brazilian girl’s life here in the Los Angeles area: The Icla da Silver Foundation.
Please visit their website and see how something so simple can save a life.
Also visit their booth at the Brazilian Day in LA 2013.
Here is a message from Carlos Wesley of the Foundation:
“Hi, I’m Carlos Wesley, from the Icla da Silva Foundation / Be The Match. Our organization is focused on helping patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other types of blood cancer. Fernanda Nogueira, a young Brazilian woman from Los Angeles is one of them.
We are the largest recruitment center in the US for the National Marrow Donor Program. Our task is increase the number and the diversity of donors in the registry, so the patients of any disease treatable by a bone marrow transplant can have a better chance to find a match and to survive.
A lot of people are very afraid when they hear ‘bone marrow transplant’… a lot of them don’t know that it’s just a donation of blood cells and more than 80% of the cases don’t require surgical procedures.
It’s really easy to get into the registry: All they need is to fill a form and to swab inside their cheeks… this will show if there is any potential donors among them. It takes about 3 to 5 minutes and they don’t have to pay anything. We can only register people from 18 to 44 years old. On September 7th and 8th, the Foundation, with the help of some members of the Brazilian and Hipanic communities, is planning some drives in the Los Angeles area including the Brazilian Day in LA 2013. I’m sending this email to encourage you to spread the information, so people can look for us to register.
If everybody steps up, we can be blessed to find somebody there that can save a life… unfortunately, the chance of somebody become a match is 1 out 50.000 people, and that’s why we need more and more people in the registry.
I’m posting below links for some videos about The Icla da Silva Foundation and Be The Match. They’re very inspiring and touchy, and I think they’ll explain the importance of the registration. Also, our website is www.icla.org and attached is an important document about our foundation.
Thank you so much for any effort of spreading this information. If you need some extra information don’t hesitate to call me – my phone number is (646) 385-0671. Thanks again!!!”
